Commissioner says he will halt counting in any center if staff members are threatened

Commissioner will not hesitate to stop counting in any vote counting centre if staff on election duty are threatened or intimidated.

The Elections Commissioner has stated that he is confident that this election will be free and fair. He made this comment during a press briefing held today (7th) at the Elections Secretariat.

He also stated that he will not hesitate to halt counting in any counting centre if any of the counting centre staff are threatened or intimidated.  The Commissioner also stated that the Police have been given powers to take necessary action to address any acts of violence. He further pointed out that there is no truth behind rumours circulating of mass scale Army deployment in the country. The Commissioner said that the Army can only be deployed if the IGP requested their presence from the Army Commander and as far as he knows, there have been no requests from the IGP to this effect.
