A recognized form of identification is essential for voting
In the forthcoming Presidential Election, all eligible voters are required to present a form of identification acceptable to the Commissioner of Elections in order to exercise their right to vote.
The following are acceptable at this election:
- National Identity Card
- Valid Passport
- Valid Driving License
- Identity Cards Issued to Clergy, Pensioners & Elders
- Temporary Identity Cards issued by the Department of Elections
It is reported that over 400,000 eligible voters do not possess a valid form of identify and may therefore lose the right to exercise their vote unless immediate action is taken to obtain an identity card. Voters who do not possess a valid identity card should contact their Grama Niladari Officer with two recent photographs (1” x 1 ¼” in size) to obtain a Temporary Identity Card issued by the Department of Elections.
